The Ancient High House
Known as one of the finest Tudor buildings in the country, the Elizabethan Ancient High House in Stafford holds the title for the largest remaining timber-framed house in England. The historical site is now a free-entry museum with a range of exhibitions in each room covering the Elizabethan period to the Civil War era and the Edwardian Period.
The museum offers something for all ages, including interactive games and quizzes for children, hands-on activities and different events and workshops throughout the year. The extraordinary Stafford building also has a souvenir gift shop on the ground floor offering local crafts, traditional toys and history books on the West Midland area.
Stafford Castle
Built by William the Conqueror, Stafford Castle has stood firmly for over 900 years! Visitors can explore the grounds and discover it’s fascinating history through the Norman times, the Medieval Years, and the English Civil War right up to the modern-day.
The castle is popular with both families and history enthusiasts. The Visitor Centre has a hands-on approach to history and brings the past to life with exciting family fun days and reenactments. Stafford Castle is also home to the annual Shakespeare production by Stafford Festival and has provided the perfect location for the plays since 1991.
Stafford Castle’s 26 acres including the Keep, inner and outer bailey, woodland and herb garden are free to visit although some events may have a cost of entry.
Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre
Home to over 30 species of birds of prey, primates, reptiles, invertebrates, cats and even raccoons, Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre in Stafford is both a hospital and sanctuary for a wide range of animals and birds.
Established in 1993, the sanctuary centre is now a licensed zoo rescuing and rehabilitating animals from a range of backgrounds. Visitors are encouraged at Gentleshaw Wildlife centre for a small admission fee and are able to meet many of the exotic animals and birds including Apache the great grey owl, Jill the harris hawk, Joe the stump-tailed macaques and Elmo & Barry the raccoons!
Shugborough Hall
A short drive from Stafford town centre, Shugborough Hall and Estate is an amazing 900 acre of stunning parkland with riverside gardens, a huge and elegant mansion house, a Georgian farm and more.
Visitors are met by living costumed characters who wander the hall and grounds sharing stories from the past. There’s also a train ride around the estate, a play park for children, and a restaurant and tea room where visitors can enjoy refreshments before browsing the gift shop.
Stafford’s Shugborough Hall is a fantastic day out with events all year round and plenty to do for all the family.
Stafford Gate House Theatre
The Gatehouse Theatre in Stafford is a stunning victorian theatre that hosts both professional and local amateur shows. The theatre has a diverse programme with shows for everyone.
Stafford residents can watch and enjoy live comedy, drama productions, tribute acts, children’s acts, music concerts and much, much more. With plenty of national acts, plays and performances passing through, the Gatehouse Theatres gives Stafford a taste of the West End. It now also boasts The MET Studio which is the town’s only venue 100% dedicated to comedy.
