Located in Berkshire, Wokingham is a market town with an interesting past. According to Wikipedia, Wokingham means ‘Wocca’s people’s home’. Wocca was a Chieftain who owned the land. In the Victorian times, Wokingham was often called Oakingham and the town was first associated with the recognisable acorn with oak leaves. The Wokingham area has also been the chosen location for several pieces of famous literature, including The Ballad of Molly Mogg and The Water Babies. 

Wokingham Leisure Centre (Carnival Pool)

Wokingham leisure centre, formally known as Carnival Pool, is a newly-developed leisure complex opening in 2022. Open seven days a week, the new centre offers a range of facilities for the local community. 

Wokingham leisure centre will include a gym, swimming pools, a children’s splashpad with fountains and jets, a sports hall, an indoor cycling studio, and a health suite with a sauna, a steam room, heated loungers and more. 

The aim of the regenerated area is to expand leisure, culture and community facilities in Wokingham town centre, and the The Carnival Pool site will also be home to Wokingham public library.

California Country Park

A long way from The Golden State, California Country Park is in the civil parish of Finchampstead and boasts 100 acres of varied land to explore, just less than a 15 minute drive from Wokingham. 

Discover scenic walks, fascinating wildlife, children’s play areas, a paddling pool, and the opportunity to spend the day fishing at Longmoor lake. With over 100 acres of ancient bogland and lowland heath, there’s plenty to do and see no matter your age! You can even spend the weekend with family and friends at the California Country Park campsite and caravan area. 

If you’re feeling peckish, you can stop off for a picnic and take in the views, or enjoy a sandwich and a well-deserved cup of tea at Jackson’s California Lake Cafe.

National Trust Finchampstead Ridges

One of Berkshire’s most beautiful spots, Finchampstead Ridges is a small group of countryside sites that nestle near the borders of Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey. 

The National Trust site has been in their care for over 100 years since it was purchased by local people and gifted to the trust after it was the home of The Times newspaper owners, the Walter Family. 

Discover stunning views across to Hogsback Ridge, take the Devil’s Highway through Simon’s Wood beneath the 150-year-old trees, or wonder what the intriguing mound at Ambarrow Hill may have been for! There’s plenty of wildlife to witness too, from the many birds to the healthy butterfly and dragonfly population to the common lizard at Heath Pond.

Wokingham Theatre 

Founded in 1947, Wokingham Theatre is an exciting amatuer repertory group who showcase eight major productions a year as well as Youth Theatre productions, experimental productions, new writings, comedy nights and a range of theatrical skills training and workshops. 

The 160+ seat auditorium at Cantley Park in Wokingham is run by a committed group of Wokingham community volunteers and presents a wide range of diverse productions and entertainment for all the family.

Monkey Mates

Monkey Mates is an indoor and outdoor activity barn in Wokingham. Go bananas at Monkey Mates! Perfect for entertaining the little ones, the soft play area and outside play park is suitable whatever the weather.
