The Best Things to Do in Lincoln

Lincoln, a historic city in the East Midlands, offers a wealth of attractions for visitors and locals alike. From the iconic Lincoln Cathedral to the fascinating museums and beautiful parks, there’s something for everyone in this charming cathedral city. Here are some of the best things to do in Lincoln, as recommended by SureStore.

Lincoln Cathedral

If you plan to visit Lincoln, the stunning Lincoln Cathedral is a must-see attraction. Dating back to the 11th century, this magnificent Gothic cathedral boasts 950 years of history with its intricate architecture, beautiful stained glass windows, and roof space with breathtaking views of the bustling city and surrounding countryside.

The Cathedral is open daily from Morning Prayer until the end of Evensong or Evening Prayer. Charges for visitors apply. However, from Monday to Saturday, admission includes a complimentary floor tour and access to the Exhibition Gallery and Discovery Centre. Please note, Lincoln Cathedral is primarily a place of worship meaning tours aren’t available on Sundays and visiting hours may vary.

Lincoln Castle

Just a short walk from the cathedral, Lincoln Castle is another iconic landmark in the city. Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle has played a significant role in English history. Today, visitors can explore the towers and dungeons around the 360-degree Medieval Wall Walk, visit the Victorian Prison and Chapel, and see Lincoln’s Magna Carta, Charter of the Forest and a guest document in the magnificent surroundings of the David P J Ross Magna Carta Vault.

There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs, ranging from toys to replica armour, and an on-site cafe selling light snacks as well as cakes, tea and coffee from local suppliers.

Museum of Lincolnshire Life

Discover the rich history and culture of Lincolnshire at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. This fascinating museum showcases the county’s agricultural and industrial heritage, showing a rare insight into community life over the years.

Exhibits range from vintage tractors to recreated shops and homes. Don’t miss the chance to see the museum’s star exhibit, a World War I tank which was one of the first to be developed by local firm William Foster & Co. of Lincoln.

International Bomber Command Centre

Pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the Bomber Command during World War II at the International Bomber Command Centre. A world-class facility, the centre is home to the UK’s tallest war memorial, a 31-meter-tall spire, as well as The Walls Of Names remembering almost 58,000 men and women who lost their lives serving or supporting Bomber Command during WWII, and two Peace Gardens designed for reflection.

Steep Hill

Take a stroll up the picturesque Steep Hill, at 6.12° it’s the fourth steepest street in the country according to Ordnance Survey.

The cobbled street is lined with independent shops, cafes, and historic buildings to explore. At the top of the hill, you’ll find the medieval Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle, as well as stunning views over the city. Stop for a coffee or a bite to eat at one of the charming cafes along the way or enjoy browsing the independent shops.

Hartsholme Country Park

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city at Hartsholme Country Park, a beautiful green space just three miles from the city centre of Lincoln and close to Swanholme Lakes Local Nature Reserve.

First landscaped in the 1860s, the park boasts a large reservoir, woodlands, grasslands and Victorian gardens to explore, as well as a children’s play area and a cafe, it’s the perfect spot for a family day out or a peaceful walk in nature.

Guildhall and Stonebow

Visit the historic Guildhall and Stonebow, a beautiful 15th-century building that has served as the meeting place for the city’s council since the Medieval period. The Grade-1 listed Guildhall building is home to numerous treasures and artefacts including the sword of Richard II, the Mayor’s Chains of Office and some impressive Royal Charters. The Stonebow limestone arch has been an iconic feature of Lincoln’s high street since its completion in 211AD!
