The Best Things to do in York

The Best Things to do in York

Discover the best things to do in York, whether you’re a Harry Potter enthusiast, a history-lover or you just fancy a nice day out in York, the city has it all!

From exploring the city’s Roman past to spending a day at the races, here are some of York’s best attractions and family days out as chosen by the York storage experts at SureStore.

Explore The Shambles

The Shambles is a medieval street in York and one of the best-preserved in Europe. A must-see attraction, The Shambles is a special destination with its winding, cobble street and overhanging, timber-framed buildings, some dating as far back as the 14th Century.

Due to its resemblance to Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series, The Shambles is a hit with fans of the book and movie who can buy a new wand from one of the many Wizard theme stores. You’ll also find cosy cafes, quirky boutiques and traditional sweet shops.

Walk the City Walls

Walking the Roman Walls that surround the city of York is also another must-do experience for tourists and Yorkshire residents alike.

The Roman fortifications were built to protect the city and is the longest wall barrier in the country and the most complete in England. The York walls are free to explore and the experience can take a couple of hours, but there’s plenty to see along the way and it’s even possible to take a guided tour. History lovers may also want to visit the Norman Clifford’s Tower at the top of the hill for an unparalleled view of York Minster cathedral and the city centre.

Visit the Jorvik Viking Centre

As well as a fascinating Roman and Norman history, York also has a rich Scandi past as the city was once under Danish rule. Way back in 866, York was invaded by the Danes and the Jorvik Viking Centre offers an interactive glimpse into what Viking life would have been like in the city. The attraction doesn’t hold anything back, be prepared for a whiff of what the Ninth Century may have smelt like and witness a fossilised Viking poo on display.

Other historic attractions in York include the spooky York Dungeon and York Castle Museum.

Stroll through Breezy Knees Garden

An award-winning garden on the edge of York, Breezy Knees Gardens offers 20 acres of stunning gardens and over 7,000 different varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees.

Known as the Flower Garden of Yorkshire, the colourful attraction also boasts a specialist nursery, where you can purchase a wide range of flowers and plants, as well as a cafe serving coffee, afternoon tea and light lunches.

Spend a Day at York Racecourse

During the race season, the spectacular and award-winning York Racecourse is the place to be. The several restaurants and bars at the racecourse mean you can make the most of the occasion and enjoy a fun-packed day at the races.

York Racecourse is also an amazing venue and hosts a wide range of events from music concerts to fashion events and the stylish Yorkshire Ebor Festival. There’s even a car boot on Saturday mornings!
