The Museum of Cannock Chase

Free entry, fascinating exhibitions, and family-fun activities all year round makes The Museum of Cannock Chase an ideal day-out for both adults and children, especially on a rainy day!

The museum site was originally a training pit for thousands of young men who were starting their career in the coal mines and now tells the story of Cannock Chase and its fascinating past. Current exhibitions include an Interactive Toys and Games Gallery, a 1940’s room, and a Coal Mining Gallery with a crawl through tunnel and more! There’s also a charming coffee shop and gift shop where you can pick up a souvenir.

Go Ape! Cannock

Located in Staffordshire’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Go Ape! Cannock is one of the best activities the area has to offer. Visitors can climb high above the forest floor, make their way across rope courses and glide through the trees on high-speed zip wires.

Although there are a few Go Ape! sites across the UK, the Cannock high ropes course boasts the most extended combined length with almost 1,500 metres of tree-to-tree crossings making it one of the most challenging trails. There are also obstacles ideal for smaller children as well as the opportunity to ride an all-terrain Segway.

Chasewater Country Park

With 360 hectares of space, Chasewater Country Park gives SureStore a run for our money! A great day out for all, the country park is less than a 20-minute drive from Cannock town centre and is the place to be for wildlife, recreation, and sport.

The vast reservoir is ideal for a range of water sports to suit all abilities, whether you want to try wakeboarding, take the children water zorbing or sail a boat across the waters. If you prefer dry land, there are several nature trails to explore, as well as walking and cycling routes. The country park is also home to Chasewater heritage Railway where visitors can step back in time.  On certain days, visitors can experience rides on old-fashioned steam or diesel trains from the headquarters at Brownhills West to Chasetown Church Street.

Cannock Park

Cannock Park also makes for a great day out and due to its excellent facilities and deserves a spot on our list of best things to do in Cannock, despite being considerably smaller than Chasewater Country Park.

A short walk from the town centre, Cannock Park is ideal for a relaxed picnic, a scenic run and much more. The excellent sport and recreational facilities include an 18-hole golf course for any Tiger Woods in the making as well as football pitches and tennis courts. There’s also a spot to skateboard and a children’s play area. For nature lovers, there are stunning seasonal flower-bed displays and a rose garden to enjoy. It’s no wonder Cannock Park is a consistent Green Flag Award winner.

Castle Ring

Another Green Flag Heritage Award winning site, Castle Ring is over 2,000 years old can be found within the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An integral part of English heritage, Castle Ring is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a must see.

The site is thought to be one of at least seven hill forts in Staffordshire and is one of the earliest examples of settlement in Cannock. As well as offering breathtaking views over the Beaudesert Old Park and the Trent Valley area, Castle Ring is home to many species of birds, as well as black darter dragonflies and even lizards making it an ideal spot for nature lovers as well as history enthusiasts.

Prince of Wales Theatre

There’s no business like show business! The iconic theatre at the Prince of Wales Centre has been entertaining the people of Cannock for over 30 years and remains a fantastic attraction.

Whether you’re treating the children to the annual panto (“It’s behind you!”), or you’re gasping at the latest on-stage drama, the Prince of Wales Theatre brings the best in music, theatre and comedy to the town. Enjoy local productions and established touring acts and concerts from their youth theatre programme.

Planet Ice Cannock

If you’re looking for things to do in Cannock, why not channel your inner Torvill and Dean and take to the ice. Planet Ice Cannock caters to all abilities and is fun for all the family.

As well as ice skating sessions, visitors can get involved in ice hockey coaching or come to watch the games. There’s also coaching sessions and lessons for toddlers to adults, the opportunity to get involved in the ice hockey games and disco nights where you can show off your best moves on the ice. Planet Ice also hosts adaptations of classic performances on the ice, a magical experience for all.  If you’re feeling a bit peckish, there’s also great food and drink options including Papa Johns, Rollover Hotdogs and classic slush puppies.
