For nearly a decade, the former Cineworld cinema at the Peel Centre stood as a stark reminder of its storied past and eventual decline. Opened in December 1990 as the Cannon 6-screen multiplex, the cinema underwent numerous rebrands—from MGM and Virgin to UGC and finally Cineworld—before closing its doors in December 2013. Its closure coincided with the launch of Cineworld’s new 10-screen complex at Gloucester Quays, leaving the original site to fall into disrepair.
What followed was a challenging period for local authorities, as the derelict building faced break-ins and safety concerns, becoming a symbol of neglect. However, a recent transformation spearheaded by SureStore and investment partner Seneca has given the site a renewed purpose. The cinema has been reimagined as a state-of-the-art self-storage facility, providing a sustainable solution to a long-standing problem while addressing the community’s needs.
A Landmark Redeemed
The newly opened SureStore Gloucester spans 61,000 square feet, offering flexible storage options ranging from compact 10 sq ft lockers for personal items to expansive 1,000 sq ft units suited for business use. It caters to a wide variety of customers, including students, families, and entrepreneurs, while contributing to the local economy by revitalizing a previously abandoned space.
Mike Wilson, co-founder of SureStore’s parent company Flexiss Group, highlighted the project’s dual mission of community service and sustainability:
“By repurposing this iconic building, we’ve turned a problem site into a valuable community asset. Our Gloucester facility not only supports local residents and businesses but also sets a benchmark for environmentally friendly design and operations.”
A Green Future for Gloucester
SureStore Gloucester is designed with sustainability in mind. The facility incorporates renewable energy solutions such as photovoltaic solar panels, EV charging stations, and energy-efficient LED lighting systems. These features align with SureStore’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices.
The building also embraces cutting-edge technology, including Smart Keyless Access – the first facility of its kind in Gloucester to embrace this exciting new tech, and an app-based management system to enhance customer convenience and security.
Strategic Location and Community Impact
Situated in the heart of Gloucester Retail Park near major retailers like Next and Dreams, and adjacent to the thriving Gloucester Quays, the facility is ideally positioned to serve residents and businesses across Gloucester and beyond. Its proximity to local hotspots allows customers to combine storage visits with shopping trips, adding a layer of practicality to the site’s appeal.
Part of a Larger Regeneration Effort
This redevelopment aligns with a broader wave of investment and regeneration in the Peel Centre area. With Gloucester Quays emerging as one of the UK’s fastest-growing retail destinations, the transformation of the former cinema contributes to a sense of renewal and progress.
A Bright Future for an Old Favourite
Once a destination for blockbuster films and family outings, the cinema has now found a new purpose as a sustainable and innovative facility for the community. SureStore Gloucester stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful regeneration, turning a site of neglect into a hub of practicality and green innovation.
Residents and businesses can explore the new SureStore facility at Units 6a & 6b, Gloucester Retail Park, St Ann Way, Gloucester, GL1 5SF. With ample parking and cutting-edge amenities, it promises to be a cornerstone of Gloucester’s ongoing development and revitalization.
